CHEEBA GELATO

Friends and Trainspotters, Uncle Eric brings you

CHEEBA GELATO
Annotated tracklist:

1. Jazzanova- Subatlantic (JCR)
A 45-second sound experiment from the superb new Jazzanova album.
2. Passenger- Night on Earth (Leftfoot recordings)
Great latin tinged downtempo piece from Chris Todd (a member of Crazy Penis, house producer) Chilly summer beats.
3.Tweak- Blood of Trust (straightahead records)
A nice soul tune with good beat and 70’s kind of vibe from the Tweak album “Hybrid Organics”
4. Koop- Bright Nights (JCR)
Taken from the album “Waltz for Koop”, Koop are a couple of guys from Sweden who make jazzy pop music. Some call it Jazz but it’s really producer’s music using jazz instrumentation and beats but without the crucial element of improvisation that defines Jazz. Anyway, it’s still really good, suitable for clubheads and NPR listeners alike. They just got picked up by an American label so you should be able to pick up the album at a non-import price soon, if not already. Koop’s tunes will probably be used in TV commercials if they allow it.
5. Jazzanova- L.O.V.E. And You & I (JCR)
These guys finally have a new album of all new tunes “In Between”. It’s really good. Out domestically on rope-a-dope.
6. Gotan Project- Vuelvo Al Sur (Ya Basta!)
One of my favorite releases of last year was “La Revancha Del Tango”. Really cool triphop tango record from France. Argentinean downtempo, buy it.
7.Desmond Williams- Spyglass (ESL)
DC’s own Desmond Williams, resident DJ/musician/producer from the Eighteenth Street Lounge crew released a fantastic downtempo instrumental album “Delights of the Garden”. ESL always comes correct and this is no exception.
8. Sly & Robbie- Superthruster (Palm Pictures)
From their 1999 release confusingly titled “Drum and Bass, stripped to the bone” recorded with Howie B. Not a Drum & Bass record in the dance music genre sense, but still great instrumental tracks from Sly Dunbar (drums) and Robbie Shakespeare (bass). These guys have been playing together forever, or at least since the 70’s. Important musicians in the Dub and reggae world, Sly & Robbie have always been pretty adventurous, exploring many different types of music throughout their long and varied career.
9. The Space Travelers- Black Hole (Future Primitive Sound Records)
DJ Quest and Cue cut up some records for your listening pleasure.
10. Tosca- Honey (Markus Kienzl Dub) (K7)
Nice remix with deep dark sexy beats. Check out the video. I haven’t seen it on MTV for some reason.
11.John Ablution Gustafson- Bluegaloo (Crippled Dick Hot Wax)
This actually is Jazz, 70’s Jazz-rock fusion from Scandinavia. Taken from the excellent “Between or Beyond the Northern Lights” compilation on Crippled Dick Hot Wax.
12. Antipop Consortium- Bubbles (Warp)
Odd Hip Hop. Anti-pop are from NYC. There’re kinda out there for Hip Hop. I like their rhymes a lot and the beats on the new record “Arrhythmia” are tight, in a strange and wonderful way.
13. T-Cisco- March of the Ants (Ubiquity)
Cool beats from a SF producer on one of my favorate labels. From the album “The Destructive Edit”
14. Jazzanova- Soon (JCR)
The first “single” off the album featuring the soulful vocal stylings of Philadelphia’s superb DJ/Producer/vocalist Victor Duplaix. Philly soul lives!, with some help from Germany this time round.
15. Offworld- Ups and Downs (Far Out)
Kirk Degiorgio collaborates with the Brazilian Jazz Fusion group Azymuth for some chilly Jazz tinged beats. As always, Kirk wears his 70’s Herbie Hancock influence on his sleave. It's a good thing.
16.Tweak- Aruban Ghost (Straightahead records)
Also from “Hybrid Organics”
17. The Black Mighty Orchestra- Black Rain (?)
Neither mighty, nor black, this is a bunch of Italians doing a kind of Jazz/House/Downtempo sort of thing from the album “To The Sky”. I don’t know the label and haven’t seen this album anywhere, a friend gave me a CDR of it about a year ago. If anyone knows where I can get it, preferably on vinyl let me know. A lot of Gamble and Huff influence on the record (Philly), very nice. Hey wait they're on Irma, cool. Thanks google.
18. Fauna Flash- Mother Nature Dzihan & Khamien mix (Compost)
From the dope remix LP "Confusion".
19. DJ Design- Soul Power ’70 (Future Primitive Sound Records)
“Soul Power!”
