Yes folks. Forget your silly digital formats. Celebrate the wax, the grooves, the boxes and boxes of records taking up way too much space in your home. The back pain from moving said boxes. That special feeling when you get a new peice of wax. The smell of decaying cardboard record covers. The toxic dust. That special crackling noise. The back spin, the scratch, the cut. The 45s w/ the big hole. Ahhhh vinyl. Today is VINYL DAY. Forget those lighweight, portable silver discs. Celebrate the 12", the 10" and the 7". Play them Loud. Vinyl is the dead format that lives.
My co-worker just gave me a fat stack of 45's. He didn't even know it was vinyl day. Highlights include John Travolta, Diana Ross, Def Leppard, Linda Jones & the Whatnauts, the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney (whoever that is), the Four Tops, Sonoma, and Many More! Order now. Operators are standing by...
Apologies to anyone who’s been wondering what’s up with this Website. My work schedule gets hectic around April and May, and when I get home from work I cook, play records or go out. But now I have time to blog again. To start here are some of favorite DJ crews around DC.
First and foremost (for me) is FunkDC. The party at Bossa on Thursdays is hoppin again and the Visions party on Saturdays is tight as well. If your lucky some dope MCs will freestyle at the Visions party, nice!
DistrictSoul DJs are fantastic and their message board lets you know what’s up in DC, House music wise. Check the mixes.
Groovedistrict (one of?) DC’s brokenbeat crews. Wednesdays at 5.
Numerous other great DJs in the DC/Balt area (Sam Burns, Pope, Oji, Tom B etc etc.)
Hooray for soulful House Music (and downtempo, hiphop, all that funky stuff) check the above sites for streaming DJ mixes.
Food post coming up.
I apologize to those of you who receive my mixes on a regular basis over the last two years because I am starting to repeat myself. I maintain the fantasy that these are promotional CDs so if there’s a track I really like it’s bound to show up on at least a couple of mixes. I’m usually just recording myself when I practice, if I like how it sounds it might become “official”. Anyway here’s another one:

Friends and Trainspotters, Uncle Eric brings you
CHEEBA GELATO
Annotated tracklist:
1. Jazzanova- Subatlantic (JCR)
A 45-second sound experiment from the superb new Jazzanova album.
2. Passenger- Night on Earth (Leftfoot recordings)
Great latin tinged downtempo piece from Chris Todd (a member of Crazy Penis, house producer) Chilly summer beats.
3.Tweak- Blood of Trust (straightahead records)
A nice soul tune with good beat and 70’s kind of vibe from the Tweak album “Hybrid Organics”
4. Koop- Bright Nights (JCR)
Taken from the album “Waltz for Koop”, Koop are a couple of guys from Sweden who make jazzy pop music. Some call it Jazz but it’s really producer’s music using jazz instrumentation and beats but without the crucial element of improvisation that defines Jazz. Anyway, it’s still really good, suitable for clubheads and NPR listeners alike. They just got picked up by an American label so you should be able to pick up the album at a non-import price soon, if not already. Koop’s tunes will probably be used in TV commercials if they allow it.
5. Jazzanova- L.O.V.E. And You & I (JCR)
These guys finally have a new album of all new tunes “In Between”. It’s really good. Out domestically on rope-a-dope.
6. Gotan Project- Vuelvo Al Sur (Ya Basta!)
One of my favorite releases of last year was “La Revancha Del Tango”. Really cool triphop tango record from France. Argentinean downtempo, buy it.
7.Desmond Williams- Spyglass (ESL)
DC’s own Desmond Williams, resident DJ/musician/producer from the Eighteenth Street Lounge crew released a fantastic downtempo instrumental album “Delights of the Garden”. ESL always comes correct and this is no exception.
8. Sly & Robbie- Superthruster (Palm Pictures)
From their 1999 release confusingly titled “Drum and Bass, stripped to the bone” recorded with Howie B. Not a Drum & Bass record in the dance music genre sense, but still great instrumental tracks from Sly Dunbar (drums) and Robbie Shakespeare (bass). These guys have been playing together forever, or at least since the 70’s. Important musicians in the Dub and reggae world, Sly & Robbie have always been pretty adventurous, exploring many different types of music throughout their long and varied career.
9. The Space Travelers- Black Hole (Future Primitive Sound Records)
DJ Quest and Cue cut up some records for your listening pleasure.
10. Tosca- Honey (Markus Kienzl Dub) (K7)
Nice remix with deep dark sexy beats. Check out the video. I haven’t seen it on MTV for some reason.
11.John Ablution Gustafson- Bluegaloo (Crippled Dick Hot Wax)
This actually is Jazz, 70’s Jazz-rock fusion from Scandinavia. Taken from the excellent “Between or Beyond the Northern Lights” compilation on Crippled Dick Hot Wax.
12. Antipop Consortium- Bubbles (Warp)
Odd Hip Hop. Anti-pop are from NYC. There’re kinda out there for Hip Hop. I like their rhymes a lot and the beats on the new record “Arrhythmia” are tight, in a strange and wonderful way.
13. T-Cisco- March of the Ants (Ubiquity)
Cool beats from a SF producer on one of my favorate labels. From the album “The Destructive Edit”
14. Jazzanova- Soon (JCR)
The first “single” off the album featuring the soulful vocal stylings of Philadelphia’s superb DJ/Producer/vocalist Victor Duplaix. Philly soul lives!, with some help from Germany this time round.
15. Offworld- Ups and Downs (Far Out)
Kirk Degiorgio collaborates with the Brazilian Jazz Fusion group Azymuth for some chilly Jazz tinged beats. As always, Kirk wears his 70’s Herbie Hancock influence on his sleave. It's a good thing.
16.Tweak- Aruban Ghost (Straightahead records)
Also from “Hybrid Organics”
17. The Black Mighty Orchestra- Black Rain (?)
Neither mighty, nor black, this is a bunch of Italians doing a kind of Jazz/House/Downtempo sort of thing from the album “To The Sky”. I don’t know the label and haven’t seen this album anywhere, a friend gave me a CDR of it about a year ago. If anyone knows where I can get it, preferably on vinyl let me know. A lot of Gamble and Huff influence on the record (Philly), very nice. Hey wait they're on Irma, cool. Thanks google.
18. Fauna Flash- Mother Nature Dzihan & Khamien mix (Compost)
From the dope remix LP "Confusion".
19. DJ Design- Soul Power ’70 (Future Primitive Sound Records)
“Soul Power!”

Here’s the track list for the other mix CD that I made around the same time as “Attack The Wack”. It’s more abstract and jazzy, and yet cheesy at times. This is the stuff I really like right now. I added extra 4 Hero for more tasty goodness.

Here are two of my favorite jazz musicians working today. First rate pianist and visionary conceptualist Uri Caine is one of the more interesting musicians around, and not just because he's from Philly. His projects employ jazz, classical, and electronic(a) elements. He's worked with many great musicians such as the awesome Ralph Peterson Jr., Dave Douglas, Don Byron etc etc. He has also employed the stylings of DJ Olive (of We) and Recloose. Check his stuff out, NOW!
Also one of my all-time favorites is composer/sax player Tim Berne. He is running his own label, Screwgun records. He is a fierce improviser and excellent composer. He studied with the late great Julius Hemphill (BAG), and this is reflected in his compositional style.
Of course there's too much good music in the world and I could name at least another 100 favorite musicians, but I'll save them for later. These guys just popped into my head and I thought I should share. They both produce top quality shit so go buy their stuff so they can eat. Tim Berne's CDs come with recipes too, so you got food and music with him.
Some of you lucky people have the good fortune to be in possession of one of my new DJ mix CDs “Attack The Wack”. For you folks (all five of you) here is the track list with links. I was too lazy to make this to put with the CD but I want these artists to get their due. If anyone can guess what movie the dialogue samples are from you get a free prize.

Attack the Wack is my 130 bpm Breaks mix CD. I've also got "broken beat/nu jazz/future jazz/whatever stupid name there’re using this week" 128 bpm mix CD, "Hyperosiris". Also the odd jazzy beats/pop breaks CD "500 Miles High". AND a new one I did last night "Cheeba Gelato", a 100 bpm downtempo smoker that will be ready soon. Thats all for now.
